Identifying, ordering and defining senses

چکیده

In a dictionary, however, senses are something distinctly different. They are basic units of entry organization: the most distinct component parts of the dictionary article. Piotrowski (1994: 21) defines a sense in lexicography as ‘one of the main divisions of the entry, usually marked typographically by consecutive letters or numbers’. Indeed, senses are often explicitly numbered in sequence, less commonly prefixed by letters, or punctuated in a typographically more subtle manner, such as by semicolons. Occasionally, special symbols are used to effect a visual separation of senses, such as a diamond ♦, centred dot •, triangle ►, or square ■.

Progressive Type II Censored Order Statistics and their Concomitants: Some Stochastic Comparisons Results

In this paper we prove some stochastic comparisons results for progressive type II censored order statistics. The problem of stochastically comparing concomitants of the two progressive type II censored order statistics with possibly different schemes, under different kinds of dependence between X and Y is considered and it is proved that if Y is stochastically increasing (decreasing) in X, ...

Quantitative Comparison of Homonymy in Spanish EuroWordNet and Traditional Dictionaries

A quantitative comparative study of homonymy in four well-known electronic Spanish dictionaries—EuroWordNet and three traditional dictionaries—is presented. It is shown that though structuring of word senses is quite different in all dictionaries under comparison, EuroWordNet differs from the traditional dictionaries much more than these differ from each other. It is also shown that the orderin...

LIN 386M Project Proposal

This project will explore the application of graphbased algorithms to identifying predominant word senses. The hypothesis is that graph-based algorithms, by considering indirect relationships between words, will be more effective at identifying the predominant senses of words than approaches which only consider a word’s immediate context.

Defining and Representing Preposition Senses: a preliminary analysis

In this document, we analyze several aspects related to the semantics of prepositions. We propose an approach and elements of a method to organize and to represent prepositions uses and senses. Complex polysemous behaviors are discussed, showing the use and limits of the approach.

Taxonomising the senses

I argue that we should reject the sparse view that there are or could be only a small number of rather distinct senses. When one appreciates this then one can see that there is no need to choose between the standard criteria that have been proposed as ways of individuating the senses—representation, phenomenal character, proximal stimulus and sense organ—or any other criteria that one may deem ...
